Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles. Bisphenol A or BPA is an industrial chemical used to manufacture many polycarbonate plastics. A study by researchers at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM) and Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS), confirmed an association between bisphenol-A (BPA) and the development of autism spectrum disorder in children. BPA could also have several other negative health effects including neurological and immune disorders, cancers, heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that detectable levels of BPA are present in 95 percent of adult human urine samples and 93 percent of samples in children! The FDA banned chemical BPA from sippy cups and baby bottles in 2102 and while groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council have long argued that BPA should be removed from all food packaging because the negative health effects, BPA still remains in many products today. 

Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986. The initial focus of Prop 65 was to limit and prohibit certain chemicals know to cause cancer, birth defects and other harmful elements that may be found in California’s drinking water. But its scope has expanded to include many consumer products including drinkware.
